Cheat sheet
BDD and Agile for testers
Gherkin, the three amigos, and what QA does in Scrum.
BDD
- Given, When, Then
- Context, action, outcome. One behaviour per scenario.
- Declarative over imperative
- Write 'a customer with an overdue invoice' not 'click the login button, type the name...'.
- Three amigos
- Product, developer and tester agree examples before building. The value is the conversation, not the tool.
- Common mistake
- Using Gherkin as a UI script. It then costs more than it gives.
Scrum for QA
- Refinement
- Ask about acceptance criteria and edge cases before the sprint starts.
- Definition of done
- Tested, automated where agreed, no open critical defects, documented.
- In the sprint
- Test stories as they finish; do not leave all testing to the last two days.
- Retrospective
- Bring escaped defects and process fixes, not blame.
Shift left and right
- Shift left
- Review requirements and test earlier, with unit and API tests.
- Shift right
- Monitor and test in production safely: feature flags, canary releases, observability.
